Metal core dielectric cladding waveguide has three layers or two interfaces. Here the core is metal and the two clad are of dielectric material. So the core has negative dielectric constant and the others have positive dielectric constant as shown in figure.
This structure is considered to be symmetric if the two dielectric constant of two clad is equal i.e. ξ1= ξ3 and if these two are not equal then the structure is asymmetric.
